High Head Slurry Pump: What to Know

Jun. 01, 2026

High head slurry pumps are non‑clogging, high‑solids industrial pumps that outperform conventional centrifugal, vortex, and positive displacement pumps in the most demanding applications. Extensive exterior ribbing allows for higher head and pressure, while bulked‑up wetted end parts handle the toughest duties. Commonly used in long‑distance transport lines, a single HH pump often replaces multiple standard pumps in series.
Key Features

  • Fully lined ductile iron casing for durability and long service life

  • Stage head 73 m; high‑pressure operation up to 750 psi in stages

  • Through‑bolt design for easy maintenance and reduced downtime

  • Large impeller diameter + slow speed → high efficiency and maximum wear life

  • Large, open internal passages reduce operating costs

  • Thick elastomer and metal liners for superior corrosion and wear resistance

  • Multiple shaft seal options: gland seal, expeller seal, mechanical seal

Pump Design Features

  • Impeller: Front and rear pump-out vanes reduce internal circulation and protect the seal; straight or semi-open vane options available.

  • Liners: Heavy-duty high chromium liners bolted actively to the casing, not unstable adhesives.

  • Throatbush: Secured with cotters for wear adjustment to maintain efficiency.

  • Sealing System: Gland packing, expeller (low-flow or dry-running options), and mechanical seals (various materials) to suit different conditions.

  • Bearing Assembly: High-quality tapered roller bearings, larger shaft diameters, reduced overhang for long life.

  • Casing: Split-case design for easy access; cast ductile iron with extensive external ribbing, pressure rating up to 750 psig, suitable for series pumping.

  • Base: One-piece base with alignment correction mechanism; overhead, side-by-side, or direct-coupled mounting options.

Shaft Seal Arrangement

  • Gland Seal: PTFE and graphite packing suitable for highly corrosive or high-temperature conditions.

  • Expeller Seal : Uses reverse centrifugal force to prevent leakage; applicable when positive inlet pressure is less than 10% of discharge pressure.

  • Mechanical Seal: Integrative construction, easy installation and replacement, excellent abrasion and vibration resistance for difficult conditions.

Model Selection & Flow Range Coefficient

  • Medium density, strong abrasive slurry: flow range coefficient 40–80%

  • Low density, high abrasiveness slurry: flow range coefficient 40–100%

  • Best efficiency point (BEP) corresponds to 100% flow coefficient

peration & Maintenance

  • Follow safety procedures during installation, operation, and maintenance.

  • Select the correct rubber or metal lined model based on slurry characteristics.

  • Regularly inspect and repair the shaft seal.

  • Adjust impeller clearance as necessary.

  • Replace worn parts.

  • Check bearing lubrication.

  • Keep idle pumps clean and in good condition.

Benefits & Technology

  • Wide application range, high efficiency, easy maintenance, excellent cost-performance ratio.

  • Rubber-lined pumps can use multistage tandem technology for long-distance transport.

  • Concentric casing and recessed impeller design reduce product degradation and shearing.

  • Can pump slurries with up to 30% entrained air without air locking.

  • Large solids passage without clogging.

  • Heavy-duty concentric casing eliminates radial loads, extending pump, seal, and bearing life.
